Going Primitive with Traditional Archery

Nowadays when you think of archery you probably think about modern compound bows. Mass produced in a factory with all of their pulleys and cables. Have you ever thought about going back to the days when a bow was simply a piece of wood, elegant and simple but yet extremely accurate in the hands of a skilled archer. No sights and counter weights to help out. When hitting your target actually required skill and practice. The bows of today require very little skill, about as much as aiming and firing a gun.

Taking a few steps back and grasping a nice wood bow is very rewarding. Shooting an arrow from a long bow for the first time is a great feeling. A primitive bow can be a challenge but the rewards are much higher. If you are handy with some basic tools you can even build your own primitive bow from scratch. The feeling of seeing the fruits of your labor come to life is great.

After years of shooting Compound Bows I picked up a Recurve Bow for the first time. I must say it only took a few shots to know I was hooked. I eventually moved into a Long Bow and then into my own homemade Long Bows. Traditional Archery is something the whole family can get into. My kids love shooting their Long Bows.
